Roof repairs

Repairs that fix the cause, not just the symptom

A good roof repair starts with finding out exactly what’s wrong.

Jon has been repairing roofs for more than 30 years. He’ll look at the roof properly, explain what he finds and fix the actual problem — whether that’s a single cracked slate or flashing that has given up along a whole chimney.

If a roof is beyond sensible repair, he’ll tell you that too. No upselling, and no patching something that won’t last.

Jon carries out roof repairs across Weston-super-Mare, Clevedon, Portishead and the rest of North Somerset.

Common problems

Common roof problems Jon repairs

If you’ve noticed any of these, it’s worth getting the roof looked at before the problem spreads.

  • Water coming into the property

Stains on ceilings, drips in the loft or damp on upstairs walls after rain.

  • Missing or slipped tiles

Often the first sign after a windy spell, and an easy way in for water.

  • Damaged slates

Cracked, broken or slipped slates — sometimes a sign of nail fatigue across the roof.

  • Deteriorating flashing

Lead that has split, lifted or come away around chimneys, walls and valleys.

  • Loose ridge and hip tiles

Failing mortar or fixings along the top of the roof let water in and can become dangerous.

  • Visible roof damage

Dips, gaps or debris on the roof after a storm or a fall of branches.

  • Overflowing gutters

Blocked or broken gutters that send water into the walls and roof edge.

  • General wear and tear

Older roofs need occasional attention to keep them weathertight.

Leaking roofs

Finding where the water actually gets in

Roof leak repairs start with finding the source — and the damp patch on your ceiling is rarely directly below it.

  • Water travels

Water that gets past a slipped tile or failed flashing can run along felt, battens and rafters for some distance before it shows. Finding the entry point — not just the stain — is what stops a leak coming back.

  • The usual suspects

Chimney flashing, valleys, slipped or cracked tiles, loose ridge tiles and the junctions where a roof meets a wall account for most leaks.

  • Leak or condensation?

Damp in a loft isn’t always a leak — poor ventilation can cause condensation that looks similar. Jon will tell you which it is.

Slate, tile and lead

Slate, tile and flashing repairs

The detail matters. A repair should be done in a way that suits the roof it’s on.

A finished slate roof with hip ridge

Slate repairs

Broken or slipped slates replaced individually and secured properly. Slate is Jon’s specialism, so he can also tell you whether scattered slipped slates point to nail fatigue across the roof.

A red tiled roof meeting at a valley

Tile repairs

Cracked or slipped tiles replaced with a close match, plus ridge, hip and verge repairs where mortar or fixings have failed.

Lead flashing where a chimney meets a flat roof

Lead flashing repairs

Where lead around chimneys, walls or valleys has split, lifted or come away, Jon repairs or replaces it so the joint is weathertight again.

The bigger picture

Why the underlying issue matters

A quick patch can stop a drip this week and still leave the real problem in place.

If tiles keep slipping because the battens behind them have rotted, or slates keep sliding because the nails have corroded, replacing the odd one won’t hold for long. Jon will explain what’s causing the damage so you can decide what to do with the full picture.

Most of the time, a well-done repair is the right answer. When it isn’t, he’ll say so — and explain the roof replacement option honestly.

“Sorted with my house and porch roof. Great job and a good price.”

Questions

Roof repair questions

Ask Jon directly — 07429 335555

My roof is leaking right now — what should I do?

Catch the water, move anything valuable out of the way and, if water is near light fittings or sockets, switch that circuit off at the consumer unit. Don’t go up on the roof yourself. Then call Jon on 07429 335555 rather than using the form.

How much does a roof repair cost?

It depends on what’s wrong, how easy the roof is to get to and the materials involved. Jon will look at the roof and give you a clear price before any work starts.

Can you match my existing tiles or slates?

Jon will look for a close match. On older roofs, sound slates or tiles can sometimes be reused, which helps a repair blend in.

Is it worth repairing an old roof?

Often, yes. Plenty of older roofs have years left in them once a specific problem is put right. If yours has reached the point where repairs won’t last, Jon will tell you straight and explain the replacement option.

Do you repair storm damage?

Yes. Missing or slipped tiles and slates, lifted ridge tiles and damaged flashing are typical after strong winds. Jon will get the roof weathertight and repair the damage properly.

Do you do general roof maintenance?

Yes — replacing slipped tiles and slates and checking ridges, flashing and gutters before small problems become leaks.
